We chat with the Armored author about his favorite single-issue comic...wait, Darkhold: Iron Man? Really?

Welcome to Married to Singles, a new Patreon Exclusive podcast series where we ask comic creators, professionals, podcasters, and fans to choose their favorite single-issue comic and discuss it with us. In this entry, Michael Schwartz selects Darkhold: Iron Man, originally published by Marvel Comics. Listen to the whole conversation HERE.
No comic book creator has surprised us as much as Michael Schwartz when he selected the subject of his Married to Singles episode. Darkhold: Iron Man - WAT? Rarely are we interested in event comic book sidequests, but this week's podcast proves that you should never judge a book by its cover or solicit.
Darkhold: Iron Man is a tremendous example of what a few collaborators can do within the confines of twenty-two pages. This single issue miraculously proclaims itself as the perfect comic to give to a curious reader ready to dip their toes into comics having saturated themselves in the movies. And then it goes where the movies would never.
Darkhold: Iron Man has a cover date of December 2021, but it was released on October 13th, 2021, from Marvel Comics. It's written by Ryan North, illustrated by Guillermo Sanna, colored by Ian Herring, lettered by VC's Clayton Cowles, and edited by Wil Moss with Sarah Brunstad.
Is Darkhold: Iron Man the Perfect Comic?
Darkhold: Iron Man is the story of what Tony Stark saw when he read the cursed titular tome. It's his life, twisted into a grotesque horror saga seemingly filtered through David Cronenberg's imagination. It's scary, sad, very gross, and tragic - you know, The Fly but with Tony Stark and Pepper Potts instead of Seth Brundle and Veronica. Also, the spooky armor at this story's center obviously recalls the spooky armor at the center of Michael Schwartz's fantastic Clover Press series, Armored. That's synergy, baby.
We had so much fun with Michael Schwartz and Darkhold: Iron Man that we forced him to agree to return to the podcast when it's time to promote the Armored hardcover release, which should be pretty darn soon, actually. Until then, make sure you're following Michael Schwartz on Bluesky and Instagram.
