Pots and Panels: A Comic Cook Book Anthology - Our First Comic

We've written our first comic, "The Vegetable," which appears in the Kickstarter anthology Pots and Panels.

Pots and Panels: A Comic Cook Book Anthology

It's finally here. After months of talking about it on the podcast, the Pots and Panels: A Comic Cook Book Anthology has launched its Kickstarter campaign, and it's on you to make sure this comic becomes a reality. Before you read any further, CLICK HERE and browse the crowdfunding page. Forget that this big beast of a book contains our first comic work ever; it's also loaded with comics and recipes from some of the coolest creators in the business: Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Tim Seeley, Steve Niles, Ron Marz, Andy Kuhn, Hilary Barta, Neil Kleid, Steven Grant, and on and on and on.

After months of contemplating our inclusion, writing our comic, seeing it illustrated by the brilliant Gerald von Stoddard, lettered by Chuck Maly, and awaiting colors by Lovern Kindzierski, we're still a little in shock that we're a part of such a unique comic creation. Our story, "The Vegetable," is a short one, merely seven pages. However, within those seven pages are seventeen years of life. The first page recreates one of our first hangouts before we were officially dating, and the last page represents what it's like for us as a couple today, happily married but utterly weird.

The title refers to a vegetable-related phobia Brad has had his entire life. We try to pinpoint its origin in this story while paying homage to the great Darwyn Cooke. You'll have to see that particular page to believe it, but Gerald von Stoddard absolutely crushed it. Early on, while dating, Brad kept this phobia secret, but their relationship (our relationship? It's so hard to write about yourself as characters) strengthened once he revealed it to Lisa.

Lisa also suffers from an anxiety disorder and carries her own strange phobia. We found that sharing and discussing our phobias together created an unshakable bond. When you suffer from an irrational fear, you can feel so incredibly isolated, but in researching and exploring those fears, you discover that you're not alone. Even Brad's vegetable-phobia has a name, and with that name comes a community.

We hope that "The Vegetable" allows you to recognize and accept your weird fears, or maybe you will be more empathetic toward those who carry something you can't understand from your non-weird fear perspective. Whatever you do, don't tease Brad about his vegetable thing, please. It's not nice.

If you want to hear us discuss "The Vegetable" and Pots and Panels: A Comic Cook Book Anthology in greater detail, you can do so by visiting our Patreon page. We recorded a half-hour conversation about it and made it free for CBCC members. And, by the way, it's free to join.

Most importantly, we hope you survey the Pots and Panels Kickstarter page. If you decide to support it, even at the dollar level, which goes a long way with these things, please also consider spreading the good word. Projects like this survive via a grassroots campaign, and we're all in this together.
