We're working our way through Neil Gaiman's graphic novel, one chapter at a time, one episode at a time.
Welcome to our Sleepwalking Through Sandman, our reoccurring Patreon podcast series, where we work through Neil Gaiman's epic, one issue at a time, one episode at a time. In this entry, we're discussing Sandman: Endless Nights Chapter Two. Listen to the unedited audio HERE.
In his introduction to Sandman: Endless Nights, Neil Gaiman writes that he's admired Milo Manara's work "for many years; his graphic novel Indian Summer, written by Hugo Pratt, is one of the high points of the comics medium." Such praise from such a writer cannot be ignored, and the passion Gaiman attributes to the artist is very much evident in the second chapter of the graphic novel.
Scanning the list of artists collaborating with Gaiman on Endless Nights is rather astounding. All, except P. Craig Russell, who illustrated last week's Chapter One, are Sandman newcomers. Half our excitement for this anthology comes from what they might bring to the universe. Manara tackling Desire, in particular, raised the tiny hairs on our arms. We're not sure they're necessarily a match made in Heaven, but they are a match made in somewhere, for sure.
This week's conversation around Sandman: Endless Nights Chapter Two features several twists. We knocked through the chapter fairly quickly, and we barely had time to share our opinion of it with each other before we smashed the record button and started shouting into the microphone. As a result, we find our feelings for the Desire chapter while talking to each other. We're in proper "sweatpants mode" with this one, stumbling, shouting, and raving our way to the episode's conclusion.
