The Harvey Awards, Hosted by Comic Book Couples Counseling

The Harvey Awards recently announced its 2024 Hall of Fame inductees...also, we're hosting the ceremony?!?

The Harvey Awards Comic Book Couples Counseling

Last week, The Harvey Awards officially announced their 2024 Hall of Fame inductees, including Akira Toriyama, Arthur Adams, Lary Hama, Sergio Aragonés, and John Buscema. Tucked neatly within the press release was another pleasing surprise: Brad and Lisa Gullickson of "the popular podcast Comic Book Couples Counseling" will host the event next Friday, October 18th, at New York Comic Con. Popular!?! We're popular!?! Yup, we're adding that to our official bio.

Seriously though, the opportunity to stand before this beautiful industry and participate in such a prestigious celebration of the medium is a tremendous honor. 2024 just so happens to be Harvey Kurtzman's centennial. We continuously return to his work on Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat, and in creating MAD, he forever altered the public's imagination. Harvey Kurtzman shaped comics, and in doing so, he shaped America. To step on a stage representing him and all the astonishing artists who came after him is ridiculously intimidating. We promise to respect our role as hosts and put all of ourselves into the job.

We encourage you to browse this year's Harvey Award nominations (FOUND HERE). These comics and comic-related works are fantastic and worthy of your time and admiration. We've marinated in Harvey Kurtzman's comics and this year's nominations for several weeks. It's been a fabulous inspiration.

In the banner above, you'll see us, Brad and Lisa Gullickson, done in the style of The Harvey Awards's official logo, illustrated by our pal Elliot Dickson. He shot this over to us almost immediately after we announced the news on our social media, and it simply fills our hearts with joy.

Anyway, below you'll find the official announcement regarding The Harvey Awards Hall of Fame inductees, including a few words from Harvey Awards co-chair John Lind, Larry Hama, Arthur Adams, Sergio Aragonés, and John Buscema's daughter Dianne Buscema Gerogianis.

THE HARVEY AWARDS HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES INDUCTEES FOR 2024

Legendary creators of manga and comic books to be honored in NYC during New York Comic Con!

NEW YORK  October 11, 2024 – The Harvey Awards today revealed this year’s inductees into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame ahead of the ceremony on Friday, October 18, 2024, during New York Comic Con.

The inductees include manga creator Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball Z) and comic book creators Arthur Adams (Uncanny X-Men), Larry Hama (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero), Sergio Aragonés (MAD), and John Buscema (The Avengers).

“This year’s induction class includes legendary manga creator Akira Toriyama, and we gratefully honor his genius by inducting him into our Hall of Fame,” said John Lind, co-chair of the Harvey Awards.

“We at the Harvey Awards are also thrilled to finally induct Sergio Aragonés, a cartoonist whose work defined MAD magazine for a legion of die-hard fans. Additionally, we’re inducting Arthur Adams, one of the most influential artists of his generation—he is your favorite artist’s favorite artist—and Larry Hama, who made long-lasting contributions to comics and pop culture and helped build a world around G.I. Joe that still resonates with fans. Finally, we’ll posthumously induct the esteemed John Buscema, a prolific artist whose work helped shape the look of Marvel Comics throughout the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s.”

Acknowledging the posthumous award for Toriyama, Bird Studio Co., Ltd. and Capsule Corporation Tokyo released the following statement: “We are very honored to receive the news that Akira Toriyama has been selected for the prestigious Harvey Award Hall of Fame. As a creator, he had always said that his work says it all. We are especially grateful to the American fans for their long-standing enthusiasm and dedicated support. We hope you will continue to support his work for many years to come as we continue to develop and expand upon his masterpieces.”

“I am deeply honored to be inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame,” said Larry Hama. “I first met Harvey Kurtzman in 1966, when as a student at the High School of Art and Design, I would visit the office of HELP! magazine. He and art director Terry Gilliam were extremely kind to this nerdy fanboy cartoonist wannabe, and opened flat-file drawers to show me original art by R. Crumb, Willy Elder, John Severin, Jack Davis, and many others. His open, welcoming nature made me feel that my goals were not as unreachable as I feared them to be.”

“What an honor it is to be inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame,” said Sergio Aragonés. “Harvey was a great inspiration to me and so many other cartoonists.”

John Buscema’s daughter, Dianne Buscema Gerogianis, shared the following: “We are honored on behalf of my father and wish to thank all who have selected him for the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame. Thank you for keeping his legacy alive.”

Upon learning of his induction, Arthur Adams said, “Wow! What an unexpected honor! And to be inducted with these four giants of the comics industry! Amazing! Thank you so much Harvey Awards! I’m shocked!”

The 2024 Harvey Awards Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized at the 36th annual Harvey Awards ceremony during New York Comic Con. The Harvey Awards winners in categories including Best Manga, Best Digital, and Book of the Year will be announced at this event. The co-hosts for this year’s Harvey Awards are Brad and Lisa Gullickson, hosts of the popular podcast Comic Book Couples Counseling.

The Harvey Awards Steering Committee is co-chaired by Nellie Kurtzman, John Lind, and Chip Mosher. Chris D’Lando, Camilla Di Persia, and Alex Rae of ReedPop coordinate the awards voting and Harvey Awards ceremony presented during New York Comic Con.
